Complete With Original Panels and Basket

Many people attempt to break some strange world records and fail, but when there isn’t a world record to beat, it makes the game slightly easier, or does it?

Over the last three months, 31 years old Colin Furze from Stamford in Lincolnshire has been locked away in his garage throwing spanners everywhere in an attempt to transplant a 125cc motocross bike engine into a mobility scooter, and all for the sake of being the “fastest man on a mobility scooter!”

Furze, who was given the scooter by a friend, decided to take on the challenge just for fun. But when he was told that there wasn’t a world record for the fastest mobility scooter, he began to get just slightly excited at the thought.

Colin contacted the Guinees Book of World Records and was told his information was correct, but would have to meet some tight standards to get into the presigeous book for 2011. The recommendations from the Official’s at The Guinness World Records was that the scooter had to be finished to look completely standard, with orginal panels, wheels and tyres.

Now that Furze has completed the mission and tested the scooter, he now aims at taking his “mean machine” to Santa Pod Raceway in Northamptonshire, so that he can do some straight line testing before he meets the World Record Officials.

On completion of his 125cc petrol powered scooter, Colin said: “I was a bit nervous when I first started it up as I wasn’t sure if it would work, but it sounded good and got to 64mph, then 69mph very quickly.”

This is all well and good for testing, but the guidelines which have been enforced by The Guinness World Records people was that he would have to travel at 61.4mph over a measured distance. When finding this out, Colin said: “I will be wearing full leathers and a crash helmet for the record attempt. My aim is to hit 70mph – and that would make me really happy.”

Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button Back The Decision

Posted by on Saturday, 9 October, 2010

British F1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button today backed the decision made by race officials to postpone the qualifying of the Japanese GP due to the sudden downfall of rain over Sazuka.

The British pair who are not too unfamiliar with ‘torents’ or rain, said that it was one of the best decisions made by race officials considering that the practice had already been affected and with bad light closing off the chance of getting anywhere for today.

From where we are, you look out over the track and all you can see is water pooling across the track, which meant that the race director Charlie Whitting had no other choice but to completely abandon any opportunity of the qualifying session being completed based on that safety had already been compromised on three occasions which had delayed the day.

This will mean that final qualifying will take place on Sunday morning at 02:00 (BST) – 10:00am local time, just 5 hours before the race us due to get underway, so let’s keep everything crossed for an incident free session or the teams may not have time to repair cars ready for the starting grid.

Jenson said: “The good thing is tomorrow is going to be a very exciting day, having qualifying and the race on the same day adds something, and it’s slightly different to what we normally have, and that could be a good thing.”

Paris Motorshow Features Jaguar C-X75 Jet Car

Posted by on Thursday, 30 September, 2010

Jaguar Concept Jet Car at Paris Motorshow 2010

Where's the filler cap George?

30th September 2010 – Paris Motorshow Today sees the launch of The Paris Motor Show with all of the top manufacturer’s airing the new models for 2011, as well as concept vehicles for the next generation.

And Jaguar are no different this year, showing off the ‘Jaguar Jet Powered Supercar’ for the first time, which is pulling mainstream editors from every corner of the motoring press and industry because “it’s electric!”

That’s right, Jaguar Cars have developed the first supercar which is powered by 4 electric motors and does not have a petrol tank in sight. The concept C-X75 has been put together as a concept, which may now become a reality due to a sudden interest in the company who have supplied the ‘Jet’ pack.

This Hy-brid car can travel over 560 miles between charges, thanks to a technological shift into using gas powered jets to supply extra ‘umph’ to the power plants. And in short, this means that the previous record set by a hy-brid supercar has just been beaten mashed by 460 miles between fill ups.

Since this technology has been thouroughly tested, the company who supplied the Jet system, Bladon Jets who are based in Shropshire, have agreed to sell a share of their business to the Inidan owners of Jaguar, Tata. And with the sudden boost of extra capitol, who knows what Bladon Jets will come up with next?

The Chairman of Bladon Jets, Paul Barrett said: “This is a very exciting milestone for our company.”

‘A’ list or ‘A’ Platoon?

Afghan Heros Mothers Day Ride Out 2010 When you take a few moments to cast your minds back through life’s experiences, things which you thought at the time meant so much to the safety of you, your family and those around you, have little consequence when you consider the situations our country is in today with respect to our Armed Forces.

Problem is, I can still see myself sitting with my friends ‘passed’ and present outside the local shops on the estate where we lived, watching others protest on their motorcycles to try and keep speeding cars at lower speeds.

The problem was that some of these people are not with us now, and I still find myself taking a few moments and thinking about what they would do to bring the media attention to spotlight such problems.

To: Present Day
Personally, I don’t mind holding my hands up in saying; “every now and again, something gets placed on my desk which takes my attention like a flashing beacon.” This, due to the nature of the beast, can also be good news as well as bad.

And no matter what it seems to be, we focus our attention on the job in hand, and write short extracts for you, the reading public, to read and digest over a coffee and a cigarette, maybe?

Yet the opposite side of the coin is pretty unbalanced, when you consider the other people and stories which get missed.

Why? Because the media in general can be a strange industry, with most of the time they (or we) getting so focused with what distributes and profits. This can sometimes mean we miss the points which are probably the most important, and by far closer to home.

This week alone, I have seen article after post about general media which in fairness, should be treated with absolutely no respect what so ever – and Lindsay Lohan is a prime example of what I mean.

Over the last few months, this one person has probably taken more space in any publication, be it on the internet or in black and white, than any other main stream topic next to the future (potential) Prime Minister of the UK, or the negotiations of settlements for Palestinians.

And for what? Because she takes drugs, breaks the law and earns millions for it.

So, let us take a few minutes and reflect on one missing piece to this jigsaw – ‘because we seem to be forgetting the people who are placing themselves on the front line to complete or accomplish something which they are instructed to do, and which was not exactly by choice.

Yes, I hear the people at the back who shout, “why did they sign up if they didn’t want to fight?”

But at the same time, why should we forget them and place celebrity focus on someone who has broken the law, been prosecuted on many occasions for the same offence and is not exactly an outstanding member of society right now?

As for me, I can publish the fact that I am slightly embarrassed at the thought of forgetting those who have protected Queen and country, and have lost their lives in the process.

Time to stand back and take stock for a second, close your mind off to the world and spare a thought to those who have not only lost their lives this last few day’s / weeks or years – but their families who miss them dearly.

Here are just a few names of those who have sacrificed life, and our wishes go out to the families of: Justin Allen 23, Brett Linley 29, Matthew Weikert 29, Justus Bartett 27, Dave Santos 21, Chase Stanley 21, Jesse Reed 26, Matthew Johnson 21, Zachary Fisher 24, Brandon King 23, Christopher …Goeke 23, and Sheldon Tate 27 are all Marines that gave their lives this week with no media mention.

Afghan Heroes Mothers Day 2010 - Wootton Bassett

And if words can not portray the picture, take a second to think why over 10,000 bikers took part in the “Mothers Day” event in Wootton Bassett – was it just for the ride, or were they just speaking out in the way they know best? The picture to the right was taken from this event, which was, according to 99.9% of attendee’s, a complete breath of fresh air cast over a somewhat dark day.

Shame the Daily Mail Reporter didn’t think about that before he classified every one of them as a ‘petrol spewing, gas guzzling over weight biker’ in his post the following day!!

A huge amount of respect is given to ALL of these people, their loved ones, and their families too.

“On behalf of the country, we thank all of our Armed Forces for what they do, because without them, we would probably be in slightly different world right now.”

Bernie Ecclestone Claims Delhi GP is Still Looking Good

Posted by on Thursday, 23 September, 2010

Delhi F1 Circuit 2011 Over the last week, we reported about the problems over the Commonwealth Games and how India is experiencing a ‘lash back’ over the accommodation not being quite up to scratch.

Well, it was reported today that this may be the case for the Delhi Grand Prix for October 2011, even though Bernie Ecclestone is claiming that everything is on target for the new track.

But according to Jake Humphrey, the BBC1 presenter for F1 – it may be a case of a last minute rush to complete the build.

Jake, who this week visited the track in Delhi on his way to singapore said, ‘ I must confess I was surprised by how much there is still to do.’

Visiting the circuit, you look down the main start / finish straight into turn one, and the track dissapears into a lake of water. We can only hope will not be the case come next October. And as if that wasn’t slightly concerning, the garages in the pits have only just been started, with the first two built, but no where near complete.

Vicky Chandhok, father of racing driver Karun Chandhok – is involved with not only the building of the track and facilities, but also the event marketing for 2011.

What Chandhok seems to think is that everything is on schedule – yet the picture being seen at the circuit is completely the opposite.

Weston Beach Race 15-16-17th October 2010

Weston Beach Race 2010
As we fast approach the beginning of October, all you can feel in your mind is the vibration of 2 stroke and 4 stroke machines bumbling up and down the beach at Weston super Mare for the coverted title “winner” of this prestige event, and a close to the MX and Quad Bike season for another year.

The message from owner of RHL Activities – Gareth Hockey, as he starts the countdown to what will be the 28th running of this traditional closer to the dirt bike competition season, on October 15-17 is that it will be a big one, and better than any other year and it will be “alive and kicking” more than ever.

Everyone could argue that we should be reporting, ‘Gareth Hockey’s alive and kicking’ after the troubled last 12 months he’s endured.

The 2009 main race at Weston had to abandoned after a serious accident at the start – which the start off months of controversy and speculation to the future of this monumental event. Then Hockey’s plans for his third British GP to be held this June ran off the rails as land issues – at one time seemingly rescued by the Chepstow Racecourse – became insurmountable.

The GP fixture was eventually relocated to the USA and Hockey, for the first time in years, fell off the radar.

Talking to TM+X Gareth Said; “No question this last year has been the worst of my life. The GP was always a difficult job, a massive drain on resources and a huge financial risk for me. With the events of the last Weston as well, in all it has been a tough time that’s hit me both financially and personally.

“I took the opportunity – once the decision to stop on the GP was made – to take a step back and review what I’ve been doing. There was little reason to be continuing with a high profile, answering to everyone’s theories and speculation as after you reach a certain point no good is ever going to come of that. Instead it was important to take time out and look at what was good and what wasn’t and determine a sound plan for the future.”

But, as Gareth explained to TM+X, it was an event worth holding on to and a must for the yearly calendar – but was that the thoughts of the local businesses who benefit to the tune of millions over the weekend?

Having spoken to many of the businesses, we found that pretty much 99% would want the event to carry on, as it was such a money spinner for them too.

But the feelings from the local district council could not be clearer, “Make sure this one goes off well, or it may be considered too dangerous to run again!

Gareth Said: “We’ve now got our five year plan sorted. We took last year’s event to bits, as we do every year – and made changes that we feel will again improve the event. We have spent many months reviewing the start procedure (we even went to look at Le Touquet to witness their race start) and everyone has come to same opinion – that the way we do it is still the safest option.

“But there were still operational matters that we felt needed revising and so while to the outside world the event will look and feel the same, RHL have taken a lot of the control of the event back in-house. We feel we are the only people that have the understanding of how the competitor and the local authority want this event to work.”

Gareth also confirmed that the event’s key sponsors – Red Bull, Doodson Motorsport, Polaris and Rock Oil – remain on board and are fully supportive of the plans to expand the event into what Hockey prefers to call a festival.

This year’s event has been expanded to three days with the introduction of the new side-by-side (Polaris Ranger Rzr ATV) race on Friday. Saturday will see a youth quad and a 65cc race followed by the traditional adult quad and sidecar race. Sunday’s programme will feature a youth 85cc race followed by the headline adult solo race.

“This year we’re negotiating to have many top BSB stars (we’ve already got a number entered) and are waiting on confirmation of signing one of our greatest Weston racers, Stefan Everts. We’re looking for a few other famous riders to swell the ‘celebrity’ ranks as well. Without question the fans love to see these names fighting it out with our regular riders – it’s what makes the race that little bit special.”

So, Gareth Hockey is back, and the Beach Race continues. The teasers set by RHL, though look a little far fetched to encourage people to register early, by saying so many competitors will get a full refund and again with the spectators, around 5 out of a potential 120,000 will get a refund if they book online during August.

Not sure which would work best, £50 to do two days at Weston Beach Race in hope to get my £50 back – or just write off the £50 as a good couple of days out with the smell of petrol fumes in my lungs, and keep doing the lottery?

Stuff it, Weston wins and so does the lotto – here goes another expenses claim for entertaining guests!!

Used Car Dealers Spark Rise in Complaints

Posted by on Thursday, 16 September, 2010

Arthur DailySince the beginning of the year, Trading Standards has announced that they have witnessed a major rise in complaints from buyers of Used Cars over tactics being used by Car Dealers.

The rise in complaints from January to June 2010 has risen nearly 20% over the same period for 2009, hich has sparked the Trading Standards to review their policies for dealers who supply Used or Second Hand Cars to the general public.

Whilst the consumer watchdog received nearly 38,000 calls regarding the “Arthur Daily” dealers, it only came in a short first place over Mobile Phone Dealers and TV’s.

Each person who had complained, had spent on average £425 to put right problems which should not have been present when they collected the vehicle.

The main probelm is that when these “Arthur Daily” style dealers prepare the vehicle for the road, if they find something which would be covered by a warranty, they let the vehicle go “as is” and then place a claim against the warranty company weeks after, giving them extra profit in the “nice earner” they sold.

This isn’t the first time the second hand car market has been questioned, and probabaly will not be the last. But, the consumer watchdog and Trading Standards do need to repair this problem soon before the industry develops a more damaging lapel badge, bringing down the good dealers who may get tarnished with the same brush by default.

In a study conducted by the OFT on the £24 billion second hand car market, an average of 9 out of 10 cars developed faults after leaving the garage and within 3 months of the buyer taking delivery.

One of the OFT’s other concerns was that the second had car industry had charged over £580 million too much due to the illegal tampering and clocking of vehicle mileage. In the research, it was claimed that “mileage adjustment” is rarely legitimate, yet they found over 50 businesses offering the service to private sellers so they could increase the value of their high mileage banger.

This report has now sparked a new wave of attack from the motoring watchdogs, with the OFT launching a campaign to help consumers know their rights better.

A trick which has been used in the industry for many years is the disclaimer sticker placed on the mileometer, which takes away most of the resposibility of the dealer when showing recorded mileage. It is claimed that one in 11 car dealers rely on these illegal disclaimers and stickers regarding the car’s previous history and condition, which they can then claim the vehicle as being  ‘sold as seen’ or ‘no refund’.

The truth is that should you purchase a second hand vehicle form a legitimate business, they can never sell it as “SOLD AS SEEN” or “NO REFUND” – these words and expressions are worth nothing, and mean less. Every dealer who supllies a vehicle has to give a warranty as standard, and you, the buying public, are still covered by your consumer rights should the vehicle not live up to the expectation.

Just remember one thing – what ever the dealer decides to tell you, get it on paper. So, should they say the the vehicle is going to be inspected, serviced, MOT and Road Fund Licence, ake sure that they place this on the order form when you hand over your deposit. Should they not wish to do this spell’s danger, so up with your bag of loot and on to the next dealer.

Ethernet Emerges as the Standard for a Unified Train Network

Posted by on Tuesday, 14 September, 2010

– The modern train is a highly networked environment. Of course there are the train control networks for real-time data management in the control of propulsion, anti-skid systems, brakes, doors, lighting, heating, ventilation, etc. But increasingly, train and network operators are looking to provide passengers with an improved journey experience, focusing on safety, security and efficiency. This has placed an emphasis on enhanced surveillance and infotainment networks.

Ethernet has long been a standard for city-wide and facility-wide security and surveillance networks, as well as for business and industrial information networks. In addition, it has proven its credentials in some of the most demanding real-time control applications at the heart of industry. So it is no surprise that rail operators should be assessing its suitability for on-board networks. And so Ethernet holds the tantalising possibility of offering a single unified network solution for both the train control systems and the security and information systems.

The attractions of Ethernet are clear. With its massive installed base, Ethernet is well understood, widely supported, and highly affordable. Industrial Ethernet has quickly become the de facto standard for demanding industry networks, with infrastructure components such as Ethernet switches and routers now able to offer the degree of ruggedness over standard office products to address the rigours of the plant floor, and deliver a high performance, standardised, open communications platform that is readily scalable and very low risk.

Mobile networking architectures, though, are a completely different ball game, where the effects of shock and vibration, and the requirement for absolute reliability in the most challenging of environments and ambient conditions take the stresses on Ethernet devices such as switches to a whole new level.

So to address the multiple networking needs on trains, Ethernet systems must be able to deliver real-time performance for control systems, bandwidth and multi-cast management capabilities for video data typical in CCTV systems, and the general VLAN requirements for information and entertainment systems, and combine all of this with the ability to withstand the high levels of shock and vibration typical in rail applications.

The rail industry standard for electronic components EN50155 introduces stringent demands for reliability, covering humidity, extended temperature range (40 to +85

Lewis Hamilton Crashes Out of Italian Grand Prix as Jenson Button Splits Massa and Alonso

Posted by on Monday, 13 September, 2010

Lewis Hamilton | Italian Grand Prix 2010
The Italian Grand Prix is always an event which brings entertainment value at it’s highest, just not normally at the expense of the leader of the chamionship and not in the first few seconds of the race..

The grid line up hosted the top 3 teams within the top 8 positions, with Lewis Hamilton failing to improve on his free practice pace using the lower placed rear wing and no “F” duct and sitting on the third row from the front.

But, this didn’t seem to affect him off the line, as he sprinted to the front and began to rub shoulders with the Ferrari’s, which ended his day about 45 seconds into the first lap with a broken front suspension arm.

This didn’t seem to bother Jenson Button, who went out in front and managed to put a couple of seconds between himself and the Ferrari’s, which was short lived folloing the first round of pit stops where Alonso managed to jump him and get back on the track only inches in front of Button.

As for Australian Mark Webber, he managed to lose a few valuable places off the line and kept getting backed up in traffic wherever he was on the curcuit – leaving him to come in behind team mate, Vettel.

The final top positions were:

1. Fernando Alonso 1:16:24.572
2. Jenson Button        +2.9 sec
3. Felipe Massa           +4.2 sec
4. Sebastian Vettel    +28.2 sec
5. Nico Rosberg         +29.9 sec
6. Mark Webber         +31.2 sec
7. Nico Hulkenberg +32.8 sec
8. Robert Kubica      +34 sec

This makes Mark Webber leader of the championship due to Hamilton collecting a DNF.
