Apple's Ping | Social Media For Music Lovers
Just as you thought it was safe to leave the world of Twitter, Bebo and LinkdIn, Apple breaks out with a full scale assult on Facebook for the space in the Social Media Music world.

Much like how Facebook works, the Apple Ping site will let people buid networks of friends and musicians, whilst building playlists based on what their mates are listening to. During the launch of the APP at an event in San Francisco, Steve Jobs concluded: “It’s a social network all about music. We think this will be really popular very fast because 160 million people can switch it on today.”

It’s not as if we haven’t got enough to do with our spare time than visit the many thousands of social network sites around the globe. Yet CSS Insight said last night, that the move was ambitious and would present a challenge to “ailing MySpace and other social networks”.

It wouldn’t be Apple if it couldn’t accessed through iTunes software on Macs and PCs, as well as through the iTunes app on iPhones and the iPod Touch. Steve Jobs also announced an updated version of Apple TV, which will play films and telly shows. A new line of iPods, including a touch-screen Nano model, was unveiled too.

Jobs also showed off a new iPod Shuffle, bringing back the old-style square shape and buttons. It will cost about £30, which is a marked improvement on previous models.
